Introducing Joanna Hurlston – Time & Away founder.

Joanna Hurlston

Joanna brought many years of experience working in Europe back to her beloved Africa. Born in Zimbabwe she has a natural love for this great continent and its large open spaces, its natural beauty, its wildlife, its people and diverse cultures… there is nothing like it, she says, “there is nothing like Africa, a land that moves to its own beat, that’s the place for me.”

She has found Cape Town and the Cape Winelands to be the perfect balance between Europe and Africa. It is a truly cosmopolitan city with people and influences from all over the world, and it is set in the most breathtaking landscape beneath Table Mountain. Her favourite place is the Cape Winelands, which is a spectacular land of interconnected valley’s, towns and farmland, where you can stay in the most marvellous homes and experience the warm African hospitality and its nature together.

Joanna has always wanted to be her own boss, for that there is no doubt. So the idea of starting her own business was just a matter of time. Although she is excited by new adventures and travel Joanna is a very homely person. She adores homes and comfort, and has a very keen interest in design and architecture. Joanna’s interest in homes and travel, and her experience working in high-end hospitality, is what inspired her to start Time & Away – a luxury holiday rental company that focuses on bringing the very best holiday homes in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands to people visiting South Africa.

“I absolutely love Oceana Villa, it is an amazing property, grand but tasteful and it makes you feel like a million dollars. I also adore The Penthouse, this is so refined for a city home and you sit high-up, overlooking the Atlantic ocean and city beneath. And for sheer beauty (a property I wish I owned) Villa Mosaic, it has the most stylish interior and offers guests the perfect holiday accommodation. My favourite place to visit in the Cape Winelands is Franschhoek, it’s a small, picturesque town set in a beautiful valley covered by vineyards. I love to stay there, and I always try to sneak a night over at 16 Cabriere. The owners have a fantastic understanding when it comes to creating a luxury home, and their collection of local art is really special, it adds to the experience.”

Since returning to Africa and settling in Cape Town Joanna has been introduced to the very best private holiday accommodation on the market. She has chosen properties for the Time & Away portfolio that offer guests something special and memorable. “Our aim is always to find the most luxurious and unique properties on the market, and to match those homes with a personalized, detailed and caring service.”

Wonderful description of Joanna and her work. The best of the best and she is right, there is nothing like Africa. I’ve visited South Africa many times over the years and I know exactly what she means by “a land that moves to its own beat”. I was hooked the first time I landed and I’ve never look forward to a holiday like a holiday in Africa. I met Joanna in London many years ago and was amazed by her caring nature, it’s so great to see her creative side blossom. Thank you once again for you caring hospitality. I wish you all the best and I can’t wait to visit again.
